Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse is On Hold

blogoldsay.jpg The federal divestiture of Old Saybrook’s Outer Light has been on hold since the meeting between Old Saybrook First Selectman Michael Pace, the U.S. Coast Guard, and the General Services Administration (GSA) on January 30, 2008.

According to Congressman Joe Courtney, the “GSA has not yet issued a notice of availability to date due to concerns of limited accessibility of the site.” In 2007, Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse was placed on National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act 2007 Program of Lighthouses determined to be excess property and available for transfer to the local community or Lighthouse Preservation groups.

Since 2007, the town of Old Saybrook has expressed numerous concerns about the Lighthouse ownership as reported in the following posts,

Old Saybrook Lighthouse Politics of Preservation, January 25th, 2008
Old Saybrook Lighthouse Quagmire?, September 20th, 2007
Old Saybrook Lighthouse Privacy, August 24th, 2007
Saybrook Breakwater Light Privacy Problems, July 18th, 2007

In summary, First Selectman Michael Pace is concerned with emergency management, navigational safety, and public access through private property in the Borough of Fenwick and public safety on half-mile jetty to the Outer Light (aka Saybrook Breakwater Lighthouse). Furthermore, if the proposed Broadwater Liquefied Natural Gas facility is constructed than Mr. Pace believes boats would need to navigate closer to the lighthouse due to the new security perimeter.
